Geophysics is a discovery science of the earth and other planets using state-of-the-art technology that integrates geology, mathematics, physics and computer modeling. Geophysicists explore the earth’s natural resources such as oil, gas, minerals and groundwater and detect earthquakes, cavities and contaminant hazards benefitting societal and environmental sustainability.

OSU geophysics faculty are committed to enhancing student success through engagement in high-quality research ranging from protecting the environment and climate to discovering water resources and oil and gas reservoirs to understanding mountain-building processes around the world. We provide hands-on domestic and international research experiences and prepare students for internships and careers in various industries as well as state, federal and non-governmental organizations.
