This degree provides a foundation for entering the accounting profession and other areas of business. To become a professional accountant, students successfully complete three levels of professional exams as well as on-the-job training. Graduates of the BBS Business and Accounting degree are exempt from the first level of these professional examinations (CAP 1 examinations from Chartered Accountants Ireland and equivalent examination papers from ACCA and CIMA professional accounting bodies).
Students also gain an excellent foundation in the management of organisations. Studying Business and Accounting together allows students to develop excellent technical accounting skills, financial analysis and a thorough appreciation of the world of business and management.
Accounting is an important component that supports the implementation of a business strategy that creates and captures value for, and from, customers. The business element of the degree gives students an appreciation of the core functions of value creation.
Students have the option of taking a four year degree with a work placement or study year abroad, thus combining what they learn in university with insights into industry or another culture.
Students who complete the Masters in Accounting at Maynooth are exempt from the second level of professional examinations. Following this, only one level of professional exams and completion of on-the-job training results in a full accountancy qualification.
