This 3-year degree programme builds the fundamental knowledge and skills of students for a career in the events industry, by mixing event modules such as Event Risk Management, Event Project Management, Event Production & Design, Event Fundraising & Sponsorship and Event Operations Management, with a solid foundation of business focussed modules in areas of marketing, financial management and entrepreneurship. The course also includes modules which encourage the personal development of students including, Leadership & Team Building, Research & Writing Skills and Volunteerism & Community Events.
In Year 1 students also begin gaining practical experience through a module called Events Industry Practice, in which they volunteer at a variety of festivals and events, including at the Gleneagle INEC Arena, Killarney. This programme is mentored and students gain academic credits towards their degree from experience gained.
Year 2 includes a Digital Marketing module and in recent years our students have entered and won prizes at the National Smarter Travel Campus Awards, as part of this module.
In Year 3, students put their learning assembled to date into practice by running a student-led event in their module, Event Operations Management. Working as an events team, and mentored by their lecturer, students plan, implement and manage all stages of a live event, as well as designing the marketing campaign and working with various stakeholders. The practical event builds skills in project management, risk management, budget planning, marketing and social media, as well as team-based delivery, meeting deadlines etc. in a fun and interactive environment. Year 3 of the degree also focuses on the wider world impact of events from an economic, social and environmental perspective, with modules such as Event Impact and Sustainable Development and Event Evaluation Techniques. The programme also includes regular Masterclasses from senior industry figures and familiarisation trips to some of Ireland's leading event venues, arenas and stadiums.
Another unique aspect of this three years Honours degree is that mentored paid work placement takes place at the end of the programme, offering many opportunities for students to gain experience in events, conferencing & banqueting, festivals, arenas & stadiums and PR/ marketing agencies during the busy summer season. The placement team on the programme are highly networked with industry, and our students have gained paid summer placement both in Ireland and abroad with leading event companies/ festivals/ venue.
